Ottavio Serena
Nato ad Altamura nel 1837. Occupò moltissime cariche pubbliche tra le quali quella di Presidente del Consiglio Provinciale di Bari e fu per sette legislature Deputato al Parlamento e Senatore del Regno. Morì a Roma nel 1914.
He was born in 1837 in Altamura. He was appointed as President of the province Council in Bari and became Minister in the Parlament and Senator of the Kingdom. He died in Rome in 1914.
Saverio Mercadante
Nato ad Altamura il 17.09.1795. Compose circa 54 melodrammi, due balli e molta musica sacra, nonché inni, cantate e sinfonie. Morì a Napoli il 17.12.1870. Ancora oggi è apprezzato e ricordato affettuosamente dai cittadini altamurani che gli hanno dedicato monumenti ed associazioni musicali.
He was born on 17th Sept.1794 in Altamura. He composed about 54 music dramas, two music dance and a lot of church music, as well as hymns and symphonies. He died on 17th Dez.1870 in Naples. Now he is remembered with love by his people who have devoled to him monument and a musical association.
Giacomo Tritto
Valente conpositore nato il 02.04.1733 da una famiglia di commercianti. Era bravo come contrappuntista ed insegnante di musica. Compose sia musica sacra che drammatica. Morì il 17.09.1824 a Napoli.
He was a good composer born on 2nd April1733 from a trader's family. He was a good counterpointer and music teacher. He composed church as well as dramatic music. He died on 17th Sept.1824.
Vincenzo Lavigna
Nacque ad Altamura il 19.02.1767. Compose dieci melodrammi di genere serio e buffo, due balli e musica sacra. Da Giuseppe Verdi era considerato grande contrappuntista e insegnante di successo. Studiò a Napoli e morì a Milano in 14.09.1836
He was born on 19.02.1767 in Altamura. He composed ten music dramas (serious and funny), two music dances and church music. Giuseppe Verdi considered him a good counterpointer and a successful teacher . He studied in Naples and died in Milan on 14th Sept.1836.
Tommaso Fiore
Nato ad Altamura il 27.03.1884. E' stato importante letterato, umanista, politico di Altamura. Si è occupato dei problemi della questione meridionale e, per questo, è stato e continua ad essere apprezzato e commemorato con opere ed associazioni a lui intestate. Morì a Bari nel 1973.
Born in Altamura on 27th March.1884, he was an important literary man, humanist and politician of Altamura. He worried himself of the meridional question problem and, for this reason, he was and he is since now appreciated and commemorated trough works and associations. He died in Bari in 1973.
Luca De Samuele Cagnazzi
Nato ad Altamura nel 1764. Fu arcidiacono nonché uno degli uomini più illustri di Altamura. Fu uno dei più importanti enciclopedisti del suo tempo, matematico, economista, lirico, metafisico, geologo, archeologo, teologo, botanico e creatore della statistica italiana. Insegnò all'Università di Napoli nel 1806. Morì nel 1852.
He was born in 1764 in Altamura. He was archibishop as well as one of most important Altamura's men. He was one of the most important literary men of his age, mathematician, economist, lyrical poet, metaphysician, geologist, archaelogist, theologist, botanist and creator of the statistic science in Italy. He began to teach at the University in Naples in 1806. He died in 1852.
